Bodyguard accused of robbing Deputy Governor at gunpoint remanded in Meru

Policeman Josphat Kipyegon, who was last week accused of robbing Tharaka Nithi Deputy Governor of Ksh.3.5 million, has been remanded with his 22-year-old girlfriend at Meru Police station.

The deputy governor, Eliud Mureithi, had on Wednesday 12th accused the policeman, who is his bodyguard, of robbing him 3.5 million at gunpoint.

The suspect has now been remanded for four days together with his girlfriend, awaiting investigations.

His girlfriend has been charged with two counts: robbery with violence and handling stolen money.

The two, who had five lawyers testifying for them in the case, appeared before principle magistrate Stella Abuya and denied charges leveled against them

Kiogora Mugambi, who is one of the two lawyers defending Kipyegon, argued that it was not clear whether the money was lost during the Wednesday 12th incident at the Deputy Govenor’s home in Kinoru estate.

He also alleged that his client’s home, Kipyegon, was broken into and Ksh.80 000 was stolen, with the money being later found at the Deputy Governor’s residence at Kibuka area of  Tharaka Nithi County.

Kiautha Arithi on the other hand, defending Kipyegon’s girlfriend argued that he did not understand why his client was charged with robbery, despite the fact that she was not present at the scene of the said incident.

Rose, a 22-year-old Hospitality and Management student at Mount Kenya University, was arrested on October 14th, after depositing Ksh.1.4 million at a KCB bank in Isiolo County.

Kipyegon has, however, proceeded to record a statement at Tunyai police station that his property was allegedly stolen, as ordered by the magistrate.

The cases will be mentioned on October 21, to determine whether the two should be released on bail pending a hearing on January 23, 2017.

Sources, however, report that the Deputy Governor is keen to withdraw his case against the bodyguard.
