Bodyguard robs deputy governor Ksh 3.5m in broad daylight

Police in Meru and Tharaka Nithi areas have launched a manhunt for an Administration Police officer attached to Tharaka Nithi County’s Deputy Governor, Eliud Mureithi, after he allegedly robbed him of Ksh 3.5 million at 10:00 am on Wednesday, October 12.

According to the police, the deputy governor was alighting from his vehicle at his Kinoru home in Meru when the guard snatched the bag containing the money from him.

Mr Mureithi claimed that he had sold a piece of land and that his bodyguard was well aware that he had the money.

He reported that the bodyguard, Josephat Kipyegon, tried to forcefully snatch the bag from him but a small confrontation, he (the bodyguard) drew the pistol threatening to shoot him if he did not let go the money.

The bodyguard is said to have been deployed to the Marimanti AP post before being seconded to the deputy governor’s security detail.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO), Collins Wekesa, said they had taken up the matter and are in pursuit of the said bodyguard.

The suspect left behind one of his shoes while fleeing the scene.
