Bomet Governor nursing facial injuries after stadium scuffle

Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto has been airlifted to Nairobi for treatment after he was injured in a scuffle at Silibwet Stadium on Sunday.

Governor Ruto stormed the stadium during a friendly match between Silibwet FC and Bunge FC, after being informed of the arrest of the Mashinani Party supporters while attending a church service a few kilometers away from the stadium.

“His sole objective was to ask the police officer in charge of security at the event to release the youths who had been arrested and to ask his officers to stop harassing the youth,” a statement by the county’s Director of Communication Kiprotich Samoei reads.

As temperatures rose, officers lobbed teargas at the surging crowd. It is then that he the governor was hit in the face by one of the teargas canisters.

Samoei’s statement, however, indicates that police officers intentionally targeted the Governor.

“A police officer in uniform made to hit him with a stick but the governor’s security thwarted the move just in time. Around ten or more police officers retreated and lobbed tear gas canisters directly at the governor in quick succession. One canister hit him below his right eye in the melee,” read the circular.

He was whisked away by his security amid a cloud of teargas.
