Bondo fishermen warned against using illegal gear

Fishermen in Bondo have been given a three-day notice to remove all illegal fishing gear from the waters of Lake Victoria,  failure to which they will face arrest and prosecution.

The directive was issued on Tuesday by the chairman of  Bondo Beach Management Unit (BMU) Network Johannes Gaunye.

He said that they plan to conduct a massive crackdown on those who use illegal fishing gear across all beaches within the region.

Mr. Gaunye stated that the planned operation seeks to conserve the lake and fight fish depletion.

He urged fishermen to adhere to the unit’s regulations to avoid arrest.

Speaking during the Bondo BMU meeting in Siaya, the chairman also directed all beach leaders in the region to ensure they work closely with the provincial administration to weed out those using illicit liquor and drugs.

According to him, these products which are usually sneaked into the country from Uganda through the lake, are turning young people into addicts.

BMU secretary Joseph Ogwel echoed similar sentiments and cautioned fishermen to be wary of illegal gear and brews.
