Boost for Wetangula as Ford Kenya endorses his presidential bid

Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula has been endorsed by his Ford Kenya party to run for president in the 2017 General Election.

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) co-principal received the boost at the party’s National Delegates Conference held Saturday at the Bomas of Kenya, Nairobi.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who is entangled in a fierce competition with Mr. Wetangula and ODM leader Raila Odinga to bag the CORD ticket to vie for president, attended the event.

Wetangula’s endorsement has been seen as another setback for the already divided coalition, as CORD is yet to settle on a presidential candidate, less than 10 months to the coalition.

While accepting the endorsement Wetangula expressed confidence that unity will prevail in CORD asserting that they will ultimately settle on a single candidate.

“CORD’s presidential candidate will be unveiled at the right time,” He said.

Wetangula also took a swipe at President Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing him of putting up with corruption in the government.

Wetangula promised that a CORD government, if elected, will ‘destroy all the sanctuaries of corruption.’

His Wiper Party counterpart, Kalonzo Musyoka, called on comprehensive implementation of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) reforms so as ascertain credible polls, adding that they (CORD) will not accept rigged elections.

Kalonzo urged all the governors summoned by the Public Accounts and Investments Committee (PAIC) to honour the call in order to help curb corruption at the counties.

Kalonzo took the opportunity to dispel rumours that he is at loggerheads with his ally, Machakos County Senator Johnstone Muthama.

“We don’t have enmity between us,” said the Wiper leader.

When he rose to the podium to address the delegates, Johnstone Muthama told off Jubilee leaders for propagating lies about a fall out with Mr. Musyoka.

The Machakos senator assured the For Kenya delegates that there is no discord in CORD, further stating that the coalition would remain united even as the 2017 polls approach.

“I know you are waiting eagerly for a break up but you will not see it, Raila, Kalonzo and Wetangula are a one united unit,” Muthama said addressing Jubilee leaders.
