Boost security along Kenyan borders, MP to gov’t

Turkana North MP, Christopher Nakuleu, has called on the government to beef up security along Kenya’s borders with Uganda, Ethiopia and South Sudan to prevent cross-border conflict.

Nakuleu, who is also the chairman of Turkana Parliamentarians’ Caucus, said on Sunday that the tension along the borders is detrimental to the country’s peace saying it is paramount to ensure security along the borders.

The MP was speaking in Kaikor near Todonyang’ where one Turkana warrior shot dead an Ethiopian elder causing tension in the border.

He urged the government to put army barracks and Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) camps in all the
areas of Kenyan borders to ensure all citizens are protected.

Turkana North borders three countries – Ethiopia, South Sudan and Uganda, and the apparent absence of police officers in these regions has prompted locals to arm themselves in order to protect the borders against external aggression saying the impact of government security is not felt at the grassroots.

The constituency is also conflicting with its neighbours over the contested Elemi triangle which Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan claim ownership.

The MP further wants the government to clearly demarcate its boundaries and put up police camps in Liwan, Lorumor and Kibish.
