Boy, 12, stabbed in the head over chapati

A 12-year-old boy is nursing head injuries after reportedly being hit with a stone and then stabbed twice by a neighbour for snatching a piece of chapati from her daughter.

What should have been a day of celebration for many took a tragic turn in Kibingei village,  Trans Nzoia after an innocent chapati incident went sour.

As the neighbour’s one-and-a half year old daughter enjoyed her chapati during the Christmas festivities, her neighbour decided to cut off a piece for himself and that is when the drama started.

“Mimi nilikua najua ni jokes, kukata hivi mtoto akapiga nduru mamake akaja akanigonga mawe nikaanguka chini,” said the little boy.

(I thought we were just joking around. On cutting off part of the chapatti, the baby burst into a loud cry and her mother came and hit me on the head with a stone, sending me sprawling on the ground.)

Daniel Wafula Masika a neighbor who witnessed the incident reiterated the boy’s statement saying, “Huyo mtoto ako na mwaka mmoja, huyo mtoto aliomba chapati kawaida tu ya watoto akachuna kidogo na huyo mtoto akaanza kulia.”

(The child with the chapati is about a year old. The other kid asked her for the chapatti and cut off part of it and she began crying out loudly. )

Mr. Masika further added saying, “I heard people screaming saying she had stabbed him with a knife. She first hit the boy with a stone then she went for the knife and stabbed him twice on the head.”

The boy, who had been left in the company of an elder sibling by their mother, was rushed to the hospital where he received treatment and was later discharged.

Police are currently in pursuit of the suspect who is said to have fled the scene with her child after the incident.
