Boy drowns while swimming at a school in Lanet, Nakuru

A family in Lanet, Nakuru County is in mourning after their 13-year-old son drowned wile taking swimming lessons.

Samuel Munge, a pupil at Roots Academy, drowned at the school on Wednesday.

” I got the report from a doctor that there was an accident concerning my child… when I went there I asked the doctor if I could see the child and he confirmed that my boy was dead,” said James Kariuki, the father of the deceased.

According to him, the Class Six pupil had joined the school only a week ago and was every excited.

For Evelyn Waihuini, the pain of losing her last born son, is too much to bear.

The family is blaiming those who should have been watching out for pupils during the swimming lesson.

“I believe it was negligent for the school to have allowed a child who doesn’t know how to swim to move to the deep end. The boy was even very short and no one bothered with him,” lamented the father.

The school head teacher Collins Odhiambo however says they did their best under the circumstances.

“What happens is that each and every class has a teacher in charge of the swimming lesson, we have a standby swimming pool instructor and is the one who removed the child from the pool and performed first aid on him,” said Odhiambo.

The family is now trying to come to terms with the death of their son, described as an obedient and humble child.

The body of the deceased is currently at the PNN mortuary as burial plans at the family home begin.
