Brace for by-elections, Kalonzo tells Wiper defectors

Wiper Democratic Movement party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has told legislators who recently defected to Jubilee to brace for by-elections.

Mr Musyoka said by-elections must be conducted in all constituencies whose representatives had shifted loyalty to the President Uhuru Kenyatta-led Jubilee Party.

He further called on the legislators to come out and declare their stand on party membership, saying that rebels should stop double-dealing and seek fresh mandate from the electorate.

“It is improper for those who have joined Jubilee to remain in office for the remaining period of their term yet they were elected on a Wiper ticket,” said Mr Musyoka.

The CORD co-principal was addressing journalists after presiding over the 10th anniversary memorial of his late Mother Sarah Malia Musyoka at his Tseikuru home in Mwingi North Constituency on Saturday.

Some of the Wiper legislators who expressed support for the Jubilee Part are Joe Mutambu (Mwingi Central), John Munuve (Mwingi North), Regina Ndambuki (Kilome), Kisoi Munyao (Mbooni) and Richard Makenga (Kaiti).

Though he agreed that it was their (rebels) democratic right to move to other parties, Mr Musyoka said the constituents should be allowed to express their constitutional mandate as well.

He said the party would soon hold a National Delegates Conference (NDC) to deliberate on the fate of the defectors, whom he said had expelled themselves from the party.

He however stated that the legislators would be given a chance to defend themselves before any action is taken against them.

“Our disciplinary committee will take everything in motion and give them an opportunity to defend themselves, may be they have not left Wiper,” said Mr Musyoka.

The opposition leader who was accompanied by Borabu MP Ben Momanyi and nominated Senator Judith Sijeny among other top Wiper officials said the party was stronger even after the exodus of the legislators.

He pointed out that a demonstration carried out in Mwingi Town on Thursday where a group of Wiper supporters burned an effigy of area MP Mr Mutambu in protest after he decamped to Jubilee was a clear indication that the party was still dominant in the region, and that locals were tired of their disloyal leaders.

Similar sentiments were expressed by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, who called on those who had defected to Jubilee to relinquish their positions and seek fresh mandate from the electorate.
