British national Richard Alden charged with murder

Former Mwananchi Group Chief Executive Officer Richard Alden has been charged with murder.

Alden, who appeared at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi, was charged with killing of 42-year-old Grace Wangechi Kinyanjui.

The Briton, who is a licensed gun holder, shot dead Wangechi, his alleged girlfriend, on June 4th, 2016 at his Karen home.

Alden, however, denied the charge before Justice Stella Mutuku and was remanded at the Industrial Area prison until June 16th when his bail application will be heard.

Last week, police said they were treating the businessman as a murder suspect following the death of Wangechi.

The 53-year-old Alden told police that Wangechi shot herself, though preliminary investigations showed that two of her fingers, the left thumb and ring finger, were fractured.

Karen OCPD Eshiphan Gichohi told Citizen Digital that Alden had rushed Wangechi to Karen Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Doctors found that her body had deep, fresh injuries on the neck and back, apparently inflicted by a sharp object, and a gunshot wound.

Police recovered spent cartridges at Alden’s house and confiscated his pistol as well as 34 bullets.
