Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala accosted by rowdy youth

Budalang’i Member of Parliament Raphael Wanjala was on Saturday night accosted by a group of rowdy youth at a hotel in Busia town.

The youth are said to have stormed the premises at around 2am and blocked Mr. Wanjala from exiting. They were reportedly demanding payment for security services allegedly rendered to the MP’s camp during the 2017 General Election.

The enraged youth, who arrived at the hotel after being informed of the legislator’s presence, locked the doors and informed Mr. Wanjala he would not leave until he settles the alleged debt said to be about Ksh.50, 000.

Confirming the incident, Busia OCPD Masai Makau said police officers came to the aid of the besieged legislator and whisked him out of the premises.

“The MP was blocked by some unruly boys who were demanding payment for last year’s campaign… they said he had not paid them,” said Mr. Makau.

“The police officers covered him and managed to get him out of the hotel and into their vehicle.”

Sources also told Citizen Digital that gunshots were heard in the ensuing chaos, a report that has been heavily disputed by police in Busia.
