Budget 2021/2022: Gov’t allocates Ksh.14.3 billion for COVID-19 vaccination

The government has allocated Ksh.14.3 billion in the 2021/2022 budget to facilitate the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines across the country.

Unveiling the 2021/2022 budget in Parliament on Thursday, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani said this amount is in addition to the Ksh.7.6 billion allocated in the current budget.

The CS pointed out that the government is keen on creating hard immunity through vaccination to battle the pandemic which has so far claimed over 3,000 in the country.

“In order to facilitate further rollout of the vaccines to create hard immunity we propose to allocate Ksh.14.3 billion in the 2021/2022 budget. this is in addition to Ksh.7.6 billion appropriated in the current budget,” said Yatani.

The government launched the National COVID-19 Vaccination Programme in March this year targeting frontline workers and other vulnerable groups.

At the end of May, about 1 million people had received their first dose, with the Ministry of Health now underway with the roll-out of the second phase of vaccination.

The Ministry of Health cites that those who received their first dose in March, a majority of whom were health care workers, will be given priority as the country seeks to progressively acquire other doses.
