3 dead, 7 injured as building collapses in Nairobi’s Huruma estate

Three people died and seven were injured after a five-storey building collapsed in Nairobi’s Huruma Estate early Sunday morning.

Two of those who died are said to be a man and his wife who were living in a structure adjacent to the ill-fated building  that collapsed at around 1.30am.

One other person, a male victim, was retrieved dead from the rubble.

The search and rescue mission by a multi-agency team comprised of officers from the military, police, NYS, St John Ambulance, Red Cross, and Nairobi County was concluded at around midday on Sunday.

According to the St. John Ambulance, the bodies, including that of a pregnant woman and a man were taken to Chiromo Mortuary.

The National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) had decried poor accessibility at the scene before resolving to knock down one side of temporary residential structures in order to create access for the rescue operation.

“National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) appeals to the members of the public to cooperate with the agencies on the ground to allow a smooth operation. We mind safety for all. Otherwise we have mobilized all the needed resources, ” NDMU said in a statement.
