Buildings on road reserve to be brought down in Makueni

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) has accused the Makueni County Government of approving unlawful developments on road reserves in its towns, warning that they will be brought down.

Speaking in Lower Eastern Malili Township during a meet the people tour, KENHA surveyor Justus Mwanga accused the county government of approving the development of several road reserves by businessmen and residents without consulting with the organisation.

“This is wastage of public funds and resources,” he noted.

On his part, KENHA Deputy Manager of Lower Eastern Kenya Cornelius Terigan said that they were asking people along Mombasa Road who have constructed structures on the road reserve to move, adding that the notice issued to them has been long overdue.

He revealed that the government plans to add another road, noting that the current road is overstretched.

Cornelius stated that the road reserve should be 60 meters from the road and warned residents on the dangers of building near road reserves, saying they were exposed to carbon emissions and accidents among other dangers.

The Sh2.7 billion road project was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta in January this year.

The road will be a key link between the port and the airport and will provide the necessary connection to the newly constructed second container terminal.

Another Sh2.5 billion was set aside to compensate people who will be moved to create room for the expansion of the road.

The project is also expected to benefit 13 out of the 17 constituencies in Nairobi City County by easing the severe traffic pressure that hikes the cost of transportation in the city.
