Busia Deputy Gov. Wangalwa defends county hospitals following paralysis cases

Busia Deputy Governor Kizito Wangalwa has come out in defense of health facilities in the county after 20 children were paralyzed following a routine malaria injection at a dispensary run by the county government in Teso.

Wangalwa stated that the county hospitals do not stock expired medicine as earlier claimed by some quarters.

Preliminary investigations showed that the paralysis was caused by wrong administration of the injection by the health workers and not the drugs.

The Deputy Governor also sought to allay any fears about public health safety in the county saying that the children are receiving adequate attention.

Medical malpractice

The Director of Medical Services Dr. Nicholas Muraguri had on Thursday said that health officials were sent to the hospital to establish whether the medics who attended to the children were qualified.

Health Executive Morris Simiyu also stated that medical malpractice may have been committed since the drugs had not expired.

Meanwhile, the Senate has given the Ministry of Health four days to investigate the cause of the paralysis and table a report.
