Busia residents protest closure of West Kenya Sugar Factory

Transport along the busy Busia-Mumias Highway was paralyzed after a section of Busia County residents barricaded the road to protest a court order to close West Kenya Sugar Factory.

The protestors complained that the closure of the newly-opened firm will adversely affect sugarcane farmers in the region.

They claimed the move to close the factory was occasioned by the ongoing conflict between the Mumias Sugar Factory and West West Kenya Factory, and called on the government to provide an alternative solution to the problem.

Busia County Governor, Sospeter Ojaamong who addressed the demonstrators, assured them that the County will oppose any attempts to close the factory.

He added that the government ought to provide a conducive environment for investors, adding that failure to do so would adversely affect economic development.
