Butternut demand growing in Rift Valley

Farmers in Central and South Rift regions have now turned to butternut production following the growing market demand in the country.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Joyce Chebwogen – a renowned butternut dealer – says the business is taking shape following the surging market demand.

Chebwogen, formerly an orange farmer, says that she makes between Ksh 200,000 and Ksh 300,000 from butternut on a quarter acre of land.

She adds that the butternut is a fast growing commodity that takes only three months to mature.

She is now one of the biggest butternut dealers in the Central and South Rift markets supplying to several retailers and small-scale sellers.

The mother of four, who operates from Kamara and Olenguruone areas of Kuresoi, says her decision was informed by the growing demand for the commodity in the Rift Valley region.

“Butternut farming takes only three months to maturity unlike oranges that may at times take up to a whole year,” said Chebwogen

Butternut, which is mostly used to wean babies, is rich in proteins.

“People with diabetes are also advised to eat butternut as it has a medicinal value,” she added.
