By-elections: ODM wins in Kilifi, Garissa as Jubilee, Chap Chap pick Marsabit, Machakos ward seats

Reuben Katana of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) on Friday clinched the Ganda ward seat in the area by-election.

Mr. Katana garnered 4,177 votes trouncing Abdul Omar, an independent candidate who came second with 2,331 votes while Jubilee Party’s Joseph Kiponda came a distant third with 589 votes.

The campaigns for the Ganda ward had turned chaotic leading to the death of one person and the consequent arrest of Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa.

Jumwa and her bodyguard Geoffrey Okuto, who are out on a Ksh.500,000 cash bail, are alleged to have stormed an ODM agents meeting that was taking place at Reuben Katana’s home. The deceased is said to be Katana’s uncle.

Elsewhere, Jubilee’s Stephen Nakeno took the Loyangalani seat in Marsabit after he garnered 1,522 votes while Kenya African Union (KANU) candidate Aaron Lesiantam followed with 1,048 votes.

In Garissa County, Sheikh Mohammed Ali of ODM won Abakile Ward seat after bagging 1,961 votes while his rival Jubilee’s Abdiwahab Osman came garnered 155 votes, KANU’S Hussein Maalim took third place with 27 votes.

Mutungoni Ward in Machakos County was clinched by Musee Mati of the Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC) party who garnered 2,892 votes trouncing Wiper party’s Stephen Kithuka who got 2,147 votes.
