Cane farmers want Sony Sugar board disbanded

Sugarcane farmers in Migori County have called for the disbandment of the current Sony Sugar Company Board of Directors saying that it has failed in addressing the plight of farmers.

The farmers threatened to paralyze all operations at the factory if their wish is not adhere to.

Speaking at the Sony Sugar Stadium during a meeting presided over by Migori Governor Okoth Obado, Awendo Member of Parliament Jared Kopiyo and West Sakwa ward representative Philip Ouma, the farmers maintained that they no longer need the board because it does not serve their interest.

Kenya National Federation of Sugarcane Farmers Secretary General Ezra Okoth said farmers will not relent in their fight to get better services.

Their demands were supported by Governor Obado who also appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to make changes in the board.

Obado said it is unfortunate that the board members told him they cannot have a meeting with the farmers because they do not have any agenda for them yet they are paid to listen and get solution to farmers’ problem.

He supported the farmers demonstration scheduled for 17th June 2016 saying that they will not allow individuals to mess the company.
