Car-free day pilot in Nairobi CBD to be done on Friday

The Ministry of Transport has announced that the pilot phase of car free days in select roads within the Nairobi CBD will be carried out on Friday this week.

Afterwards, private motorists starting February 1, will be required to keep their private vehicles at bay on Wednesday and Saturdays and instead use public service vehicles in a historic piloting phase that is geared at de-congesting the CBD but one that has been met by opposition and equal measure of support.

The roll-out of the car free days is targeting select roads among them Moi Avenue, Harambee Avenue and City Hall Way in a move expected to reduce congestion and ease flow of traffic within Kenya’s busiest city.

The policy also gears to embrace the Bus Rapid Transit(BRT), a brainchild of the Nairobi Regeneration Committee that was tasked with solving critical challenges facing the capital.

Once car free days are implemented, members of the public are expected to cooperate and use public service vehicles on the selected roads with Uhuru Park and Railway bus terminus designated as parking spots during the 2 car free days.

In a press briefing in Nairobi on Wednesday, Public Works Principal Secretary Paul Maringa said the two days; Wednesdays and Saturdays, only individuals with bicycles, police vehicles and emergency cars will be allowed into the City Centre.

Hawkers will however be allowed to take over the streets for the entire two days, to sell their wares on the numerous parking lots in the City Centre.

According to the PS, matatu operators will drop and pick passengers at the designated termini.

The pilot phase will cover these four roads; Moi Avenue, Harambee Avenue, City Halll Way and Agha Khan Walk.

The BRT system is one of the major moves the government is hoping will address the traffic menace in Nairobi by having a complete ban of cars in the CBD.
