Car overturns at Likoni channel hours after trailer plunged into ocean

A car overturned at the Likoni channel just hours after a trailer plunged into the Indian Ocean.

One person was seriously injured after the pick-up belonging to SGA Security hit him.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital following the accident that occurred at around 3pm on Wednesday.

Four people who were onboard the pick-up however escaped unhurt.

The driver explained that he had come from Ukunda and as he was approaching the Likoni channel, the brakes apparently failed.

To avoid plunging into the ocean, the driver said he attempted to turn the car and that is when it hit the pedestrian and overturned.

This comes hours after the driver of a trailer lost control and plunged into the ocean.

“At 4:15 am a loaded truck Reg. TZ548 while boarding MV kilindini from mainland side lost control after hitting the ferry’s prow causing the truck plunge into the sea. The truck had one occupant who escaped unhurt,” a statement from the Kenya Ferry reads.

The incident caused a huge traffic snarl up as only one side of the ramp was operational.

The trailer was later pulled out of the water after almost eight hours as multi-agencies had to wait for the tidal movement to go down.

There was a similar incident on January 10 after a bus plunged into the Indian Ocean at the Likoni ferry crossing.

The driver of the tourist bus belonging to Pollman’s is said to have lost control of the vehicle before it plunged into the ocean.

Reports indicate that the bus driver had intended to board the ferry enroute to Mombasa island but veered off the ramp.

The driver and all the passengers who were onboard the bus were however rescued.
