Cashless Matatu System Starts

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Director General Francis Meja said that the law requiring the use of the new technology of using cards in place of cash will be fully enforced from 1st December.

Howerver, most commuters are said to be still unaware on how the system works.

The Matatu Welfare Association Chair Dickson Mbugua called for the suspension of the system until all stakeholders are consulted and involved in how the system operates.

Meja said that 1st December remains the deadline for the new system.

Meja warned that Matatu SACCOS who are noncompliant will pay a fine of 100,000 shillings.

The cashless system was launched on 5th November in the presence of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero.

The Matatu Owners Association (MOA) partnered with Safaricom and to launch the cashless payment for commuters in Nairobi.
