Cashless Payment on PSVs to be Implemented Soon

Passengers using public transport may soon not need to use cash to pay their fares.

This follows introduction of a cashless pay card system that will see passengers swipe their fares.

This will be a requirement for all public transport operators starting July 1st this year.

The new system was launched today by the Matatu Owners Association together with the Matatu Welfare Association.

This is in line with the government law that outlaws the use of cash for bus fare payments.

According to MOA chairman Simon Kimutai, the new system of paying fares will reduce bribery that is rampant in the matatu industry

This he says will help end bribery taking place between matatu operators and policemen and county askaris

“Matatu owners lose a lot of money through extortion from cartels, bribes to police or even embezzlement by employees since the sector is very liquid and the crews are often in control of large sums of money on a daily basis,” said Mr Kimutai.

"As of July 1st, it is going to be illegal to pay through cash in any public service vehicle" added Kimutai

According to police reports there are over 10 carjacking a day in the capital alone.

The PSVs operating the MY 1963 card will also be fitted with CCTV cameras to try to curb terror attacks and vehicle based violence.

The card will also ensure a fair system of pay as conductors will not be able to change fare rates.

A national identification card, valid phone number and date of birth will be required to create a virtual id for PSV users.

However, as the deadline quickly approaches, only a few PSVs have installed the devices that will enable commuters to pay using smart cards.

Nairobi will be used as the pilot for the project and if successful, it will be implemented to other counties across the country.
