A Catholic bishop in Nyahururu, Nyandarua County has decried rising cases of domestic violence in the country attributing the vice to lack of social skills in the society.

Bishop Joseph Mbatia called for scrapping of single-sex schools saying mixed schools were of advantage as they help in building social skills among learners.

The bishop, who was speaking in Nyahururu during a Church service, urged the government and other stakeholders to look into the matter and come up with solutions.

While criticizing the status of single sex schools, the clergy said the schools provide nothing but a barrier to unique relationships.

He further added that gender stereotypes created in single-sex schools create confusion and limit many aspects in a child’s life.

“For example, girls will only know what they’re told about boys and the same will apply to boys only knowing what they are told about girls,” he said.

The clergyman reiterated that single-sex schools do not prepare people for marriage despite empowering them academically.

“Single-sex schools don’t prepare people for marriage despite them empowering them academically, hence it will be difficult for the children to cope with life after school,” Mbatia said.
