Catholic church back steps on politicians ban, receives cash from politicians

Just a day after catholic leaders warned their clergy against political campaigns in the church, the Catholic Church in Mathari in Nyeri County played host to legislators who did not shy away from politicking.

The leaders, who were attending a family day and a fundraiser in aid of the construction of a Catholic university at Mathari Pastoral Centre, defended the government over corruption allegations.

Kieni MP Kanini Kega, Road and Infrastructure CS James Macharia and Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu attended the function, where Kega – ironically – echoed the Church’s move to bar politicians from the pulpit.

“It is despicable for politicians to use Churches to engage in political attacks and rhetoric. Political leaders who are interesting in political exchanges should organise public barazas to engage in politics and leave churches out of it,” Kega said.

Kega then proceeded to defend the Government over the recent graft scandals that have dominated headlines, saying the Opposition was using the media to sling mud at the Jubilee administration.

Governor Irungu called for prosecution of individuals found culpable in corruption scandals instead, of dragging the President or Jubilee government in the mud as a whole.

CS Macharia, who was representing President Uhuru Kenyatta, presented his Ksh.3 million donation alongside his Ksh.200,000.

Kega and Governor Irungu donated Sh100, 000 each.

Geoffrey Rigathi, who was representing his brother, Governor Nderitu Gachagua, donated Ksh.500, 000.

Archbishop Peter Kairu thanked all present and for their donations.
