Catholic priest collapses and dies at Hotel in Machakos

A Catholic priest collapsed and died on Friday evening at a hotel in Kangundo, Machakos County.

Father Michael Muange, 60, is said to have collapsed at Tala Hotel where he was watching the 7pm news.

Confirming the incident, Nguluni Parish Chairman Sammy Maitha said the deceased was in the company of his brother when the unfortunate incident happened.

Father Muange was recently appointed as the first parish priest to head Sacred Heart Parish in Nguluni which was elevated by Archbishop Anthony Muheria.

Previously he served at Kangundo Parish and Machakos Cathedral. While at Kangundo, he started Holy Spirit Primary School for the less fortunate children in the area.

“This was an exemplary servant of God. He performed his work in the Lord’s vineyard with ease. I will truly miss Father Muange’ s preaching as they were simple and down to earth. He was a very understanding priest who listened to his people and was easy to get along with. Very social and friendly,” said Martin Mutua, a veteran journalist and a close friend of the departed.

Father Muange is reported to have been suffering from a heart condition which is suspected to be the cause of his sudden demise.

Police have since launched investigations to ascertain the cause of his death.

It’s barely a decade since Father Muange celebrated his silver jubilee ceremony as a priest when he received recognition from Pope Benedict XVI for his service.
