CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge appointed to UN task force

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Central Bank of Kenya Governor Dr. Patrick Njoroge to the United Nations Task Force on Digital Financing of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Task Force was launched on November 29, 2018 by Mr. Guterres and its mandate will be recommending strategies to harness the potential of digital and financial technology to advance SDGs.

The appointment is effective immediately and the task force is expected to present its preliminary report of recommendations to the UN secretary-general in September 2019.

In accepting his new role, Njoroge lauded Kenya on its success in digital finance.

“I fully concur that digitalization of finance has great potential in facilitating achievement of the SDGs. The invitation is also an important recognition of Kenya’s success in digital finance and financial inclusion, with lessons that have been useful for other countries,” said Dr. Njoroge.

While launching the task force Mr. Guterres noted that technology has helped expand financial inclusion by 1.2 billion people in just six years.

Prior to his appointment as Central Bank boss in 2015, Dr. Njoroge was an advisor to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
