Census 2019: Kikuyu, Kenyan Somali, Mijikenda among 10 most populous tribes in Kenya

Results of the 2019 population census have given more insight into the Kenyan population based on different ethnicities.

In the final report from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) the Kikuyu community is listed as the most populous in the country with a population of 8,148,668.

The Luhya community comes a close second with a population of 6,823,842 followed by the Kalenjin which has a tally of 6,358,113 people.

Kamba and Luo communities take position four and five with populations of 5,066,966 and 4,663,910 respectively.

The Kenyan Somalis take position six with a population of 2,780,502 followed closely by the Kisii with a population of 2,703,235.

The Mijikenda, Meru and Maasai took positions 8,9 and 10 with populations of 2,488,691, 1,975,869 and 1,189,522 respectively.

Least populous

Making the tally of the least populous Kenyan communities are the Dahalo with 575, Kenyan Americans with 596, Gosha with 685, El Molo with 1104 and the Konso with 1299 people.

The 2019 population and Census results released on November 4 showed that the Kenyan population has grown to 47.6 million with women marginally outnumbering men.

The most populous counties were listed as; Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Kakamega and Bungoma while Lamu, Isiolo, Samburu Tana River and Taita Taveta are the least populous.

President Uhuru Kenyatta said the numbers released will help guide the Government in planning purposes.
