Chandarana employee ignores NCIC summons over racist email

A Chandarana Supermarket employee failed to appear before the National Cohesion and Integration Commission despite being summoned at 10am.

Rima Patel, Chandarana’s Marketing Specialist, had been summoned to appear at 10am but did not show up.

She was to record a statement clarifying what her remarks in the email meant.

Her email that was leaked six days ago sparked public outrage with a section of Kenyans calling for a boycott of Chandarana.

In Nairobi, Chandarana has branches at the Yaya Centre Mall, Lavington Mall, Diamond Plaza, Highridge, Karen, Ad Life (Kilimani), Muthaiga, ABC Place and Rossyln Riviera Mall in Gigiri.

According to the email, the marketing specialist communicated that the supermarket’s primary focus would be on “white” customers.

“We are delighted to inform you that our supermarket chain, would like to give you free vouchers to winner/raffles/best performer/runners-up candidate in upcoming events.

“As we are now focusing on white people to attract our supermarkets,” the email from Rima Patel read.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko would then cancel the company’s license even as some criticised him saying he had no rights to do so.

A day later, the Chandarana management issued an apology saying action would be taken against the employee who sent the email.
