Change exams grading system KUPPET

The Kenya Union Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has asked the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to consider changing the grading system in this year’s national examinations.

Speaking after a meeting with stakeholders in Meru County on Tuesday, KUPPET national vice chairman Julius Korir said that KNEC should standardise this year’s examinations to allow students with the highest scores get the highest grades.

“KNEC ended cheating in national examinations and that’s a good thing but they should consider moderating the exams this year because last year students were required to score 80 percent in in the English test in order to get grade A but no student in the country managed that,” Mr Korir said.

He also proposed that to cut on costs and allow flexibility, KNEC should have regional venues for marking examinations as opposed to having one in Nairobi County,

“KNEC should consider having multiple venues instead of teachers travelling from far to mark the exams,” said Mr. Korir.

Korir was flanked by KUPPET’s national gender representative Catherine Wambilianga who said that the current political situation in the country will affect preparations for the examinations.

“The current political situation in the country is not good for the education sector because students and teachers will not fully concentrate on course work therefore we call upon the political class to find a solution to the crisis,” Ms. Wambilianga said.

This comes ahead of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) 2017 starts on Tuesday October 31 and ends on Thursday November 2 while the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) will start on Monday November 6 and end on Friday November 29.
