The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has now declared support for Wiper Party candidate Agnes Kavindu in the Machakos senatorial by-election.
This comes a day after the ODM Machakos branch endorsed John Katuku, a candidate vying for the seat under Governor Alfred Mutua’s Maendeleo Chap Chap party.
“In the spirit of NASA and BBI, we SHALL rally our support to the Wiper Party candidate Ms. Agnes Kavindu to become the next Senator of Machakos County. Ms. Kavindu was a member of the BBI Steering Committee that came up with the Bill before the Counties,” ODM said on Twitter on Friday.
It was not immediately clear if the endorsement of Katuku on Thursday had been revoked or whether there had been consultation with ODM party leaders before the announcement was made.
ODM Machakos Branch Chairman Peter Mutuku had indicated that the party’s regional leadership would back Katuku for the by-election.
“We have resolved to have a cordial working relationship between the two parties – Maendeleo Chap Chap and ODM that will extend beyond the March 18th by-elections,” he said.
He cited the Machakos County coordinating team and branch chairpersons drawn from all 8 sub county branches: Machakos Town, Masinga, Yatta, Mwala, Kathiani, Kangundo, Matungulu and Mavoko.
Those present during the announcement were Yatta MP Charles Kilonzo, county assembly members among other leaders.

Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka said Wiper was not keen on the perceived bad-blood between their nominee and her ex-husband Johnson Muthama.
““As wiper party we have no business in breaking families by nominating Agnes Kavindu Muthama for Machakos seat, we nominated her because of her qualifications but fortunately she shares a name with others,” Kalonzo said.
