Chaos as Kieni residents scramble for dead elephant meat, tell off KWS officers

Nyeri residents were on Saturday scrambling to get elephant meat after the animal was found dead in Kieni area.

Armed with knives and a machete, they proceeded to cut off the head and parts of the abdomen.

Some took pictures of the dead elephant as they waited in bated breath for their share of elephant meat.

It is alleged that the mammal tried to break into the compound of one Richard Ngari at 2am on Saturday.

However, it was electrocuted to death after pushing against the electric fence at the home in Ragati, Gakawa ward.

Ngari told journalists that he decided to erect the electric fence after increased cases of human wildlife conflict in the area.

Moments later, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officials arrived at the scene and ordered the residents to stop cutting up the animal.

They burned the remains and warned residents against consuming game meat that is not fit for human consumption.

Irate residents however told off the KWS officials and vowed to continue killing elephants citing them as a menace.

Last month, a 19-year-old boy was left fighting for his life in Baringo after he was attacked by elephants at Timboroa village.

According to the victim’s father Simeon Chebiegon, his son was reportedly trampled on by the elephants and left unconscious.
