Chaos rock Tharaka Nithi Madaraka Day celebrations
There were chaos during this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations in Tharaka Nithi County after Governor Samuel Ragwa and Chuka Igambang’ombe Member of Parliament Muthomi Njuki supporters clashed at Kathwana market.
The confrontations started after the Chuka MP, who has declared interest in the Tharaka Nithi gubernatorial seat, took to the stage to make his speech and the supporters of the Governor started shouting him down.
The supporters were engaged in a ‘shouting contest’ forcing the national administrators and police officers to intervene and quell the chaos.
Police officers had a hard time trying to control the youth who were on top of the vehicles trying to stop Muthomi from addressing the gathering and at one point, the youth clashed with the police.
Muthomi has been accusing the Governor over mismanagement of the county funds.
Muthomi declared he will be contesting for the seat, a pronouncement that was not welcomed by the Governor’s supporters.
County commissioner Florence Amoit asked the leaders to respect each other and stop incitement that might end up creating divisions among the residents of the county.
She said that the leaders and the residents must respect national celebrations and avoid politics in such celebrations adding that its sign of disrespect for the politicians to use celebrations as a campaign platform.
