Charity Ngilu Reveals New Developments in Waitiki Land Saga

Speaking after an 8-hour grilling by the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) Tuesday, Ngilu absolved herself of claims that she had inflated the cost of Waitiki land in Likoni so that she can get a Sh65 million kickback.

Ngilu said the land owner had demanded to be paid 9.6 billion shillings before the president Uhuru Kenyatta intervened where the government agreed to pay 1.1 billion as compensation for the land, a deal that the owner Evans Kamau had refused.

She insisted that due process was followed in surveying the land before the sale and further talks between Waitiki, President Uhuru Kenyatta, the Treasury, former CS Ole Lenku and Joseph Kinyua among others.

“A further negotiation was to be done on a face-to-face meeting between Waitiki the president himself. It was agreed that he be compensated at Sh1.1 billion meaning the president himself saved, by his intervention, the public that much money,” she said.

She was also questioned on the seizure of land along State House Crescent Road and Karen land saga.

STATE HOUSE LAND

Ngilu also claimed that the State House land belongs to the government and was given to the City Council of Nairobi in 1965 to be used for a school playground adding that the land has since been taken back by the government and will be used to set up a ministry of foreign affairs headquarters.

She however refused to discuss the Karen land saga whose ownership is being contested in court.

The Lands Cabinet Secretary said she had presented all relevant documents to EACC to defend herself against the claims.

Charity Ngilu is one of the five Cabinet Secretaries that were mentioned in the EACC report over corruption allegations.

The other cabinet secretaries are Davis Chirchir (Energy), Felix Koskei (Agriculture), Kazungu Kambi (Labour), and Michael Kamau (Transport).

All the cabinet secretaries have since stepped aside as the EACC continues investigations into corruption allegations.
