IEBC boss skips meeting that was to discuss resignations

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati has cancelled his appointment with a House team that was scheduled for Wednesday morning.

He had been summoned to appear before the Justice and Legal Affairs committee to shed light on the quorum hitch brought about by the resignation of three commissioners on Monday.

In his letter, Mr Chebukati requested that the team postpone the session due to the ongoing by elections in Nyeri and Kwale.

Three of the six IEBC commissioners resigned on Tuesday citing lack of faith in Mr. Chebukati’s leadership. There have been calls for the remaining team to also quit with some leaders claiming that IEBC is a “cursed” institution.

On Wednesday, the House team’s committee chairperson said it is not their mandate to push them to resign.

“The remaining three commissioners are duly appointed to serve in that commission, our role is oversight,” MP William Cheptumo Kipkiror told journalists.

According to him, the issue is not the resignation of IEBC commissioners but how to replace them and if the remaining ones leave too, the possibility of having the entire institution re-constituted.

The three commissioners who resigned are Ms Connnie Nkatha (vice chairperson), Dr Paul Kurgat and Ms Margaret Mwachanya.
