Chebukati left out as JSC shortlists 41 candidates for Court of Appeal judges

From the 82 gazetted applicants, some of the prominent persons given the green light by JSC include Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Issack Hassan and lawyer Katwa Kigen.

Other notable persons onboarded on the 41-member shortlist include Justices Chacha Mwita, Anthony Mrima and Lady Justice Grace Nzioka.

Those who failed to make it to the shortlist include former IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati and former IEBC vice chair Lilian Mahiri Zaja.

Others include Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD) chairperson Priscilla Nyokabi and Justice Nixon Sifuna.

Members of the public have been invited to avail any information of interest concerning the shortlisted candidates on or before May 13, 2024, at 5:00 pm.

JSC had on February 2, 2024, announced vacancies for 11 Court of Appeal judges who would serve until they attain the retirement age of 65 years (for early retirees) or 70 years as stipulated in the law.

JSC Chairperson and Chief Justice Martha Koome noted that the judges would be earning a gross monthly salary of between Ksh.775,845 to Ksh. 1,187,152, based on guidelines by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

The announcement came after President William Ruto met with CJ Koome and promised that the government would recruit 25 judges for the High Court and 11 judges for the Court of Appeal.
