Chemususu, Kirandich dams allocated Ksh.5B

Chemususu and Kirandich dams in Koibatek, Baringo County have been allocated Ksh. 5billion to complete treatment works.

Water PS Joseph Irungu said completion of the works is set for March 31 this year and the dams are expected to serve over 300,000 people.

PS Irungu said both Chemususu and Kirandich dam projects have so far received Ksh 2.9million and Ksh 2.1 million each respectively ahead of the completion.

He was speaking at Chemususu Dam in Eldama.Ravine constituency on Thursday.

The PS was accompanied by his counterparts Jerome Ochieng (ICT); Harry Kimutai (Livestock); Joe Okudo (Sports); Government Spokesman Rtd. Col. Cyrus Oguna and other State officials.

PS Irungu noted that they are designing the last mile connectivity to ensure that residents get water.

On his part, Rtd. Col. Oguna explained that the Chemususu dam is 95% complete and has been serving residents living near by but due to lack of the last mile connectivity which is connecting the 300,000 households to water, it hasn’t been able to serve Baringo and Nakuru counties to capacity.

“Phase one (construction) is complete. Phase two is to enable distribution of water to residents of the two counties. This model dam has a capacity of 28 million cubic meters of water. This dam gets is source of water from two rivers Lelgel and Sawich,” he said.

The Government Spokesman averred that the dam’s location is strategic since the two rivers flow into the dam reducing the constraints brought about by siltation.

“The dam’s location is strategic since the two rivers flow into the dam reducing the constraints brought about by siltation. 257kms of pipes will be used to distribute the water using gravitational pull making it cheaper. The project was allocated 2.8 billion,” he added.
