Chief, 25 others arrested over hacking to death of suspected chicken thief in Kakamega
- Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i has said the owner of the weapon used in the merciless act as well as individuals who stood by and watched without intervening have also been taken into police custody.
An administrator in Shinyalu area, Kakamega County, is among 26 people that have since been arrested after a video emerged of a man hacking a suspected chicken thief to death with a panga.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i, in a statement released Monday, said the owner of the weapon used in the merciless act as well as individuals who stood by and watched without intervening have also been taken into police custody.
“The area chief was in very close proximity of the scene of crime and failed to take any administrative action. Seven suspects have already appeared before Kakamega High Court,” read the statement.
The CS further stated that the deceased suspected chicken thief is yet to be identified but that his fingerprints have been taken for forensic analysis.
“Further, we are gravely concerned with what seems to be a regular occurrence of violent crime with impunity in the aforementioned area,” said CS Matiang’i.
“As such, I am informed and in occurrence with the IG’s directive, to have the operation to flush out criminals continue, until all those responsible for conducting, aiding or abetting these reprehensible acts face the full force of the law.”
Four of the suspects were on Monday detained for 15 days over the gruesome murder by a Kakamega court after the prosecution requested for more time to detain them pending conclusion of investigations.
Francis Muse Liseche alias Moi (the suspected murderer), Evans Lichoti Ashihundu (34), Agapitus Ingosi Ang’uswa (43) and Reuben Smith Shitambasi (48) appeared before Magistrate Hazel Wandere who set the case for hearing on August 13, 2019.
