Chief commits suicide in Imenti South

A chief from Chure location in Imenti South committed suicide on Saturday morning under unclear circumstances.

The body of Geofrey Mwiti alias Simba, 43, was found dangling from an avocado tree behind his house at Kiamigogo Village.

“It is not clear why he hanged himself. He was a wonderful officer and I am in shock to receive this information because I was with him up to 5.30pm yesterday. This is a big loss to us,” Mr. Mugo Gichiri, Imenti South Deputy County Commissioner said.

According to the DCC, the chief may have taken take his own life due to stress.

“There are reports that yesterday he was asking for a soft loan of Ksh. 50,000 from friends. I’m also informed by some officers that he seemed stressed over unknown issues which could have pushed him to hang himself,” he added.

Residents were in a somber mood and termed the death as unfortunate.

“We are shocked that he took the decision. He was our man full of wisdom and great counsel. The chief was a great investment in government for he had also got rid of illicit liquor and drugs from our area,” Mr. Kenfrey Koome said.
