Chiefs house torched over illicit brew
Suspected illicit brewers torched Ngiroche sub-location assistant chief Stevenson Njogu’s house in Kirinyanga County Thursday night by hulling a petrol bomb.
The assistant chief says the attack was because of his efforts in the fight against illicit brew in the area which has faced great opposition from the brewers and some residents.
Njogu is now urging the government to arm chiefs so that they can protect themselves from such incidents.
President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a crackdown on the production and sale of illicit liquor a month ago.
The directive came amidst a growing concern that people were excessively indulging in the brews which have stunted their economic productivity.
