Chiefs warned against out-of-court deals in rape, defilement cases

Chiefs and their assistants have been put on notice over alleged negotiations between victims’ parents and rape suspects to settle cases out of court.

This comes after reports emerged that some of them have been acting as mediators despite the number of rape cases increasing at an alarming rate over the past three months.

“It is unfortunate for any government officer should engage in such negotiations instead of arresting the culprits and ensuring that the victims get justice,” Kangaru Eastern Regional Commissioner Wycliffe Ogallo said.

Ogallo said it is illegal for any government officer to promote such talks and those found culpable risk losing their jobs.

“They must be arrested and prosecuted for aiding the violation of the rights of young girls and obstructing justice,” Ogallo added.

He was speaking during a security meeting with chiefs from the county.

The commissioner also warned chiefs against allowing early marriage saying children should be in school and not be forced to sacrifice their education.

Embu County Commissioner Esther Maina echoed similar sentiments saying they will not allow “Kangaroo” courts.
