Child, 6, burnt to death in house fire

A 6-year-old child was burnt to death Saturday night after a fire gutted down their house in Godjope village at Suna East sub-County, Migori County.

Confirming the incident, Godjope location Chief Mr Elisha Oluoch said the fire was started by a tin lamp that accidentally set the child’s blanket on fire when he was sleeping, luckily two children who were also in the house managed to escape unhurt.

According to reports the parents were cooking in the kitchen when the fire broke out, unfortunately by the time they realised the house on fire it was too late to salvage anything.

Meanwhile, police have arrested the child’s stepfather on suspicion of being behind the fateful incident.

Chief Oluoch noted that the suspect rushed into the house but only rescued his biological children and the cows, leaving the 6-year-old in the burning house.

Oluoch added that it was unusual that the suspect did not know the deceased’s full name despite having lived with him the same house for a long time.

The body of the deceased was taken to the Migori Level 4 Hospital Mortuary.
