Children among seven killed in Homs airstrikes monitor

Warplanes killed seven people including two children and a woman in Syria’s countryside north of Homs on Friday (August 19), a monitoring group has said.

The airstrikes occurred in the town of al-Ghantu, 12 miles (19 km) north of the city of Homs, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

There were “many wounded” the observatory said, but could not supply an exact number.

Videos uploaded to social media by Syrian rebel groups purport to show the aftermath of the attacks. At one point a man is seen wearing the insignia of the Syria Civil Defence group, a British-backed search and rescue organisation that operates predominantly in rebel controlled areas.

Homs was one of the Syrian cities where the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad in 2011 first turned into an armed insurgency. It has faced near-daily bombardment by his forces since then, backed by Russian air power.
