Children paid a hefty price in post-election protests

The post-election violence witnessed after the August 8 election which was later annulled by the Supreme Court has resulted in many deaths and injuries.

Police always insist that many of the affected were protesters who were either armed or were destroying property. But among the dead and injured are innocent children caught up in the melee that they had anything to do with.

Here are a few cases…

August 10: Baby Samantha Pendo, a blessing bequeathed to Lancer Achieng after suffering two miscarriages was the first of many children who would pay a hefty price with their lives in the ensuing post-election chaos.

Pendo, who was about to turn six months, was hit with a club on the head by an ant-riot police officer in Kisumu after they forced their way into their house.

Baby Pendo suffered a cracked skull and slipped into a comma for four days before giving up the ghost.

August 12: 9-year-old Stephanie Moraa was struck by a stray bullet as she was playing at the balcony of their house in Mathare, Nairobi. She died on the spot.

October 16: Michael Omondi a Form 4 student in Vihiga Boy’s High School was shot and killed during a confrontation between police and protesters. His mother, Mama Michael, said he had been sent home over school fees arrears and was on his way to town to buy ice cream.

October 16: In Nyamasaria estate, Kisumu County, 2-year old Shantel Kageha was also playing outside their house when a stray bullet struck her on the shoulder.

Shantel, who was in the company of her friends, was lucky that she did not pay with her life. She survived the ordeal and underwent successful surgery to remove the bullet.

October 26: In Homa Bay, a 14-year-old pupil was shot dead after police and NASA protesters clashed.
