China and Japan hold talks over North Korea issues

China’s Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs Wu Dawei met Japanese Foreign Ministry’s Director-General for Asian and Oceanian Affairs Kenji Kanasugi in Tokyo on Wednesday (April 26) to discuss North Korea.

Washington and Pyongyang have been ratcheting up pressure on each other in recent weeks, with the United States sending a aircraft carrier group and nuclear submarine to the region and North Korea attempting more missile launches in defiance of layers of U.N. sanctions.

Wednesday’s discussions come after trilateral talks among representatives from U.S., Japan, and South Korea were held on Tuesday (April 25) where all parties agreed to pursue Chinese and Russian efforts in deterring an increasingly hostile North and its nuclear and missile programmes.

Japan’s envoy on North Korea, Kenji Kanasugi, said he and his U.S. and South Korean counterparts agreed in talks in Tokyo on Tuesday that China should take a concrete role to resolve the crisis and could use an oil embargo as a tool.
