Chinese firm on the spot for allegedly harassing employees
Over 100 workers from a Chinese Construction company along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway on Tuesday, November 8 downed tools following claims that one of them had been roughed up and locked at the Mau Summit police station for more than two days without any charges being pressed against him.
the victim, identified as Gideon Kiplangat, said he was hit on the head using a blunt object becoming unconscious and only to find himself in the police cell hours later.
“The next thing I remember is finding myself locked up in the cells. I am still in pain but they have refused to allow me to access any medication or treatment,” he narrated.
Speaking outside the Mau Summit police post, Kenya Building Construction and Timber Union Secretary, Rev Maurice Chisoga, the workers accused the Chinese construction company of brutality against its staff saying that Kiplangat, a guard, was attacked at night by one of the Chinese nationals who later called on police to arrest him.
“We suspect that these police officers are colluding with the Chinese employers in torturing the locals who earn peanuts from the hard labour. This has to stop because they are human beings and they deserve to be treated fairly,” said Chisoga.
The accused, identified only as Mr Wang, was allegedly found negotiating with the police for the release of the victim without being presented in court.
Efforts to communicate with Mr Wang were futile as he could not understand English or Swahili.
