Cholera-hit Nakuru Bans Eating at Weddings, Funerals

According to Nakuru county chief officer of health services, Dr Samuel Mwaura, 76 cumulative cases have been reported since last week.

The ban includes eating at wedding and funeral ceremonies.

Mr Mwaura said that in collaboration with the Nakuru Water and Sanitation Company (NAWASCO), the county government has increased chlorine levels in its water supply system as well as unblocking storm water drains.

“Health workers across the county have been put on high alert. Members of the public have also been advised to exercise high standards of hygiene,” Mwaura said.

He added that so far, the county government of Nakuru has established key cholera treatment facilities at the Rift Valley General Hospital,  Bahati Sub District Hospital , Langalanga  and Rhonda Health Centres as well as Kiti Health Centre.

The officer noted that so far the Nakuru County Government has put two ambulances on standby to reach out to patients as soon as cholera cases are reported.

 As schools re-open on Monday, Mwaura said that public health officials will visit all schools so as to create awareness and provide hand washing facilities as a control measure.

 He said that cases of new infections have declined.
