Cholera: Two dead, 10 admitted in Trans-Nzoia
Two people are reported to have died and several others hospitalised following a cholera outbreak in Trans-Nzoia County.
According to Medical Superintendent Dr. Wanjala Simiyu, the two died while undergoing treatment while 10 others are admitted at Kitale County Referral hospital.
The outbreak has been reported at the densely populated Kipsongo slums within Kitale where people were taken ill after drinking contaminated water.
Dr. Wanjala told the media that blood samples taken from the affected persons showed that the victims had contracted the deadly disease.
“We hope to contain the condition,” said Dr Wanjala.
A victim, Martin Wasikoto narrated how he started developing stomach upsets and diarrhea after drinking water at a hotel at the slum.
“I started to have a severe diarrhea on arrival at home before my wife made arrangements to rush me to the hospital but I’m feeling better now from the treatment I am receiving,” said Masikoto who was admitted on Saturday.
A team of health workers have pitched camp at Kispongo slum to conduct surveillance and educating dwellers on health issues.
