Christians wary of political interference in security

Mombasa Christian leaders have expressed concerns over alleged political interference with security issues in the county.

The leaders claim that a section of politicians have been aiding the release of suspects from police cells.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Mombasa Pastors Forum led by Dr. Bishop Wilfred Lai claimed that part of the insecurity challenges they are experiencing is due to political interference.

The religious leaders also condemned the alleged killing of a worshipper while coming from a church service last Sunday in Majengo area saying that there is a need for investigations.

However, coast regional police boss Mr. Robert Kitur maintained that police are currently investigating the incident and that his officers are doing everything possible to ensure there is enough security in the region.

This comes a few days after Mombasa county commissioner Nelson Marwa and a section of legislators claimed that some politicians were assisting suspects to get out of police cells who later continue attacking people in the area.

Kitur further dismissed recent claims by Kaya elders that over 50 Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) members had disappeared after being arrested by security officials in various part of the region.

He also said that the family members need to report the matter to the police to help in investigating if they are part of Kenyans who sneaked out of the country and joined the Al Shabaab militia group in Somalia.
