Church elders lash out at Jubilee, NASA leaders

The National Council of Churches (NCCK) of Kenya has accused the country’s political leadership of disregarding the rule of law and  failing to address what they termed as fundamental issues that risk tearing the country apart.

Speaking during a press conference on Friday, NCCK Secretary General Reverend Canon Peter Karanja castigated the two political factions for involving themselves in partisan and showmanship tactics in dealing with the current crisis the country is facing.

“We have witnessed blatant disregard of the rule of law by both the government and the opposition the climax being the shutdown of four TV stations that denied Kenyans access to information. Kenyans are living in fear that we might have reverted to the days of repression and manipulation of the media,” said Reverend Karanja.

The Council’s Secretary General further condemned the government’s use of excessive force on the opposition while terming the recent revelation by Raila Odinga on the August 8 presidential election, as a partisan approach.

While emphasizing on the need for a constitutional review, the consortium also insisted on the need to have full closure of the 2017 presidential polls and called on the stakeholders to see that 2022 elections are not held in the same environment as 2017.

“The 2017 presidential elections are not over but have instead bequeathed two centers of power that are in a superiority and popularity contest,” said the Reverend.

According to the Reverend, to have short term amendments on the review of the governance structure would offer the opposition ‘dignity’.

On October 31, 2017, NCCK called on parliament to amend the constitution saying: “NCCK recommends that Parliament should amend the constitution to include the position of a Prime Minister and two Deputy Prime Ministers and the restoration of the official leader of the opposition post,”

However President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto have since dismissed the suggestions saying that they will only engage in dialogue focused on the set development agenda.
